As former Stage Manager of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, I welcome you to my
Kevin Burton Music link (I'm still doing music).
I was chosen to handle Stage,
Technicals and Logistics in January 1976. It's a great story that
will entertain you in the link below, it will open a new window.
I was along for the ride of my life and enjoying every
beautiful moment. I have had the opportunity to be in some of the
most beautiful places in the Country. It was the faces of the
crowds of people that heard the music and felt the band that I
will never forget.
I was a witness to History (his - story). All because of a guy
named Frankie, with a band called Maze.
A story from bits & pieces collected over the years by
Michael Burton Sr.
In August 1975 I promoted my first major concert featuring
Soul Train recording artist "The Whispers", Dorothy
Morrison("Oh Happy Day"). On the same show was an up an
coming band called "Raw Soul" that I had promoted in a
number of shows all around Northern California. The band was
"awesome" and I found my niche.
By the way, the band featured the talents of lead vocalist
Frankie Beverly. Signing a recording contract with Capitol
Records and changing its name to "Maze featuringFrankie Beverly", a major success story
was born.
Early in 1975 I would meet and use Kevin to open that show and
to musically accompany a Magican that I would fly in (
we had never seen a magician! -
"Goldfinger & Dove"). All I knew about him was he
could play the keyboards. We would find out later that we are
related.
Some time later, I would take it to the next level. Maze
wanted to add more keyboards and I suggested Kevin.
Done deal. The rest is History.
All sales of these items on my page add funds to next years Productions. Thank You in Advance.

I started playing drums approximately in the 5th or 6th grade.
Around 1968 (eight grade) I began playing drums with local bands
at talent shows etc. I met a Hammond Organ B-3 keyboard player by
the name of Kevin Burton. I could hear
this fantastic organ playing through the vibrating windows of his
house while doing my paper route that was to help buy my new drum
set.
We started a jazz trio with Kevin
Burton (keyboards), Bobby Sporr (guitar) and Marciel
Garner on drums.
Around 1970, we would put together a funk band that we named
the "2 things in 1".
Rare funk from the East Bay scene of the early 70s – every bit as heavy and hard-hitting as grooves from Sly Stone on the other side of the water at the time! Two Things In One may not be a household name, but they groove as hard as any of the best big funk acts of the early 70s – awash in the free-thinking, open spirits of the Family Stone generation – and graced with a nice dose of spiritualism in the vocals – almost a dash of Stevie Wonder that helps deepen these tunes way more than you'd expect! Production is nice and raw – honed at Oakland's Music City studios – and the album's like finding a whole pile of funky 45s you never even knew about – with a nice diversity in grooves throughout, but a tight cohesive style overall. Titles include "Stop Telling Me", "Snag Nasty", "Silly Song", "Let's Get It Together", "Overdoes Of Your Love", "You're No Good", and "Together Forever". CD features a few more tracks than the LP!
We had the jazz, rhythm and blues & funk all in one band.
Management would put together a tour package with the
"Pointer Sisters" that we would accompany and open for.
Our dreams were becoming a reality. The "2 Things in
1" were being blessed after all the hard work, the year was
1972. This same year we had a record on the charts regionally in
Northern California named "Silly Song".
In 1973, we had 1 single on "Music City Records named
"Together Forever". We played on all of the big local
bay area shows opening for all the big acts like "Earth Wind
& Fire", "The Ohio Players", "War",
"Funkadelic", "The Sylvers", "The Isley
Brothers", and "The Whispers", just to name a few.
In 1975, the Band went to Los Angeles for a major label deal in
principal. We released a single entitled "Aint No Need In
Holding On". This was with a subsidiary label for A&M
Records(Almo), and was produced by Gordon Diwitty, former Band
Leader for Bobby Womack and a writer for many other major artist.

The Music City Story: Street Corner Doo Wop, Raw R&B and Soulful Sounds from Berkeley, California 1950-1975 (Audio CD).

Ray Dobard’s Music City Records of Berkeley, California, across the Bay from San Francisco, is a catalogue of mythic proportions that has 0been cherished for decades by a small hardcore of R&B, vocal group and, latterly, soul fanatics. Based on the available evidence – 50-odd 45 and 78rpm releases – and a lot of hearsay and rumour, many have spent hours fantasising about the purported riches in the possession of its famously protective, zealous owner.
Ace Records is thus proud to unlock the Music City vault for the edification and entertainment of the world at large with the 3CD set “The Music City Story”, an unprecedented survey of the label’s 25-year operation, and an excellent primer for Ace’s forthcoming genre- and artist-based compilations of Music City material, telling the story with many rare gems from the catalogue and a surfeit of previously unissued goodies.
Although Ray Dobard experimented with recording a variety of genres, the legend of Music City is predicated on its role as a premier exponent of black rhythm and blues styles, with a strong regional flavour. Most significantly, the sound of Music City was street. Much of what appeared on the label and lies in its voluminous cache of unreleased recordings can be said to reflect the evolution of black popular music between the early 50s and the mid-1970s. It reflects reality: this is what was heard in clubs and juke joints, at high school auditoria and rec centres, rent parties or literally out on the sidewalk, with all the dissonance and unoriginality that might imply, but matched equally by huge, invigorating dollops of innocence and exuberance, and a surprising amount of inspiration.
Amongst the set’s 78 tracks are names familiar to doo wop and blues collectors – the Crescendos, Gaylarks, Rovers, 5 Lyrics, Alvin Smith etc – while behind several others lurk famous names (James Brown, Lou Rawls) or others soon to be famous (Sugar Pie DeSanto, members of Sly & the Family Stone). From the raucous jump blues of Del Graham’s ‘Your Money Ain’t Long Enough’ to the hip street soul of Darondo, the breadth of genres represented is extensive, but the overall emphasis in “The Music City Story” is upon the black vocal group, be it 50s, 60s or 70s vintage. It is the rich seam of Bay Area groups mined by Music City that collectors most closely associate with the label. Dobard had only a couple of minor hits – the 4 Deuces’ popular ‘W-P-L-J’, Johnny Heartsman’s raucous ‘Johnny’s House Party’ – but kept the tape machine running pretty much constantly for much of his quarter-century in the business.
It has been many years since as significant a stash as Music City’s has come to light, and accompanying the tantalising musical treats is an extensive, heavily-illustrated sleeve note detailing the label’s history. Given that the late Dobard was notorious evasive, an air of mystery has always surrounded his activities in music, but this is the first time a recounting of the Music City saga has been based upon hard data, rather than supposition. Documents, letters, tape box annotations, discographical notes, session chatter, even recorded phone conversations form a considerable body of evidence, that helps bring into focus what this fiercely independent and pioneering black entrepreneur achieved. Ray was no Dootsie Williams or Jake Porter, but nevertheless, a picture emerges of a fascinatingly complex figure, whose role in the black music scene in the mid-20th century cannot be discounted. As venerable East Bay bandleader Johnny Talbot puts it, “to me, Ray Dobard was the foundation of Bay Area music. There was hardly anyone who did anything later who didn’t bump into Ray, so he had to be a foundation.”
